It can be hard to stay motivated in the gym when life outside of the gym is hectic. The busier we get, the easier it is to put the gym on hold. But, being consistent in the gym helps boost energy levels and mental health. So, how can you find a pattern of consistency in a chaotic world?
1. Plan a routine that is exciting and engaging.
A routine that excites you will keep you engaged and interested in the gym. Nothing is less motivating than a boring gym routine that you feel you have to force yourself to finish. Don’t be afraid to try new workouts to find something you love!
2. Pick a time that fits in your schedule.
You might like getting up early and heading straight to the gym. Or you might hate getting up early and need to find a time that fits your needs better. Instead of going home after work, head straight to the gym. This might help you stay consistent rather than getting comfortable at home and not wanting to leave again. But maybe your schedule doesn’t allow you to head to the gym after work. Look at your schedule and find a time that works for you. Choose a time that gives you plenty of time to complete your workout so you don’t feel rushed, but remember that a good workout doesn’t have to last an hour or more. Moving your body for 30 minutes daily is better than not moving at all!
3. Remember who you are doing this for.
Show up for yourself by holding yourself accountable and getting in the gym. Your body and mind will thank you! Setting larger goals for yourself is important, but don’t forget about the small ones along the way. Our large goals can take a long time to achieve, but small wins deserve celebration, too. Set a plan when you don’t feel like going to the gym. We all have days when we are tired and want to skip our workout. What are you going to do to put a stop to those thoughts and show up anyway?
4. Consistency = Results
Being consistent is the key to reaching your goals. Set your goals and make a plan to reach them. Your plan should always include consistency. If you want to build muscle, challenge yourself and choose those heavier weights. If you want to build endurance, don’t let cardio scare you. Find a form of cardio you enjoy and start the path to your goals. No matter what your main goals are, remember that a balance between all kinds of exercises is the most beneficial.
5. Fuel your body.
You can’t perform at your best if you aren’t eating right. Choose nutritious foods, and remember to eat your protein. Fueling your body will make showing up to the gym much easier, and recovery will go much smoother. Maximize the benefits of being consistent in the gym by eating a balanced diet.
Facing the gym head-on and starting a routine can be challenging. Be brave and start today; you won’t regret it.
